We stumble. We fall. We ask for forgiveness. We get back up only to stumble again. And again. The Christian walk isn’t easy. I don’t know about you, but I often find myself discouraged with my own weaknesses.
I’m reminded that Paul seemed to deal with the same issue. “…For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep doing.” Romans 7:18-19
So, what can we do to help us on this rugged spiritual journey? First of all, I suggest learning to forgive yourself – seventy times seventy times if necessary. Give yourself some credit for even acknowledging your sins, your attitude of repentance, and your effort to change. God knows your struggles and He knows your heart. He’s in this battle with you!
Next, pray. Then pray some more. Ask the Holy Spirit to do a work in you. To lead you and guide you and to give you strength. “…Casting all your anxieties upon him, because he cares for you,” I Peter 5:7. Then rest in the Lord and let Him work in your life.
I also recommend getting in the Word and spending some time being amazed at how great God is and how much He loves us. My go to verse when I’ve missed the mark is Psalm 103. A small portion reads, “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;” It’s good to be reminded of these things.
Overcoming our struggles isn’t easy. God knows that. When you fall, get back up. Dust yourself off and keep going. Know that you are not alone. We are all in a spiritual battle. Put on your armor of God and stay in the fight. We walk with the One who has overcome the world and He is a compassionate and loving God who will never forsake you. Even when you fall.
God Bless-
Linda
