Have you ever felt distant from God? Like He’s gone quiet and you feel alone? I think as Christians we all struggle with this from time to time with our relationship with the Lord. The question is, how do we get through these moments of Spiritual silence?

I’ve found that when I feel abandoned, my best course of action is to get into God’s word and remind myself of His truths and promises. The first thing I must remember is that God never leaves us. He tells us that in Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” That’s very comforting and worth meditating on.

The second promise I remind myself of comes from James 4:8, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…” Maybe the truth of the matter is I was the one who drifted away from God, not the other way around. Think about that for a minute too.

So how to you draw closer to God? Try reading His word more often than you do. And read it to understand Him better, not just because it’s on your to do list. Spend time talking with Him about what you read and ask Him what He wants you to learn as go.

I also find that talking to God as a friend or Father instead of giving Him a to do list helps my prayer time. God loves you and wants to know what’s on your heart. “Casting all your anxieties upon him for he cares for you,” 1Peter 5:7.  I recently have found that journaling my thoughts to God has really brought me closer to Him. I haven’t kept a daily journal in years, so starting it up again has given me a daily date with the Lord that I actually look forward to!

If you are struggling with not feeling God’s presence, you are not alone. It will pass. God always has a plan and a purpose. Maybe He just wants to hear a little more from you!
